Squad tended the native plants at Cottonwood Corner with the Green Tukwila Partnership. The COVID work party pause caused an explosion in weed growth, rather like the exponential spread of a pandemic. There was much work to be done removing noxious species and mulching thickly over the seeds that have spread but the kids and parents got so much done!
It was satisfying to see a fresh layer of chips in the gathering space at the end next to a tall green mound on the weed-drying pallet. Worms and woolly bear caterpillars made a fun appearance. According to Wikipedia “The banded woolly bear larva emerges from the egg in the fall and overwinters in its caterpillar form, when it literally freezes solid. First its heart stops beating, then its gut freezes, then its blood, followed by the rest of the body. It survives being frozen by producing a cryoprotectant in its tissues. In the spring it thaws.”
